In March 2004, a pursuit by Gonzales Police Department ended with the fleeing vehicle crossing the I-10 median and crashing head-on into a car carrying a family of six. Trooper First Class Kevin Smith was one of the first units to arrive on the scene of this horrific crash. With the assistance of a uniformed National Guardsman, he pried a door open. He then saw a small, lifeless child lying on the floor. He cleared the child's airway, which appeared to be blocked with food and blood. With the assistance of a nurse, he began to administer CPR. The two worked together to revive the small child who began to breathe as EMS personnel arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, the National guardsman and the nurse left the scene before they could be properly identified and thanked for their efforts. Because of the actions of Trooper First Class Kevin Smith and the two good Samaritans who assisted him, baby Kayla is alive today. |
