Buckles

In 1999, we unveiled Buckles. Buckles is a panda bear dressed in a State Police uniform reminding children and adults alike to "Buckle Up!" The panda bear was chosen because it was rated as the most popular bear. There are only approximately one thousand panda bears left in the world so we wanted to draw the parallel that panda bears are as precious as children, they can't be replaced.

When the Louisiana State University graduate students proposed the campaign, they devised a jingle sung to "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands." They wrote the following jingle sung to that tune:
If you're safe and you know it, buckle up,
If you're safe and you know it, buckle up,
If you're riding in a car, no matter how far,
If you're safe and you know it, buckle up.
Since Buckles introduction, he has been seen on billboards, Public Service Announcements, brochures, tray liners at McDonald's restaurants, school presentations, bumper stickers, book covers, fuzzy stickers, tattoos, and as a beanie baby. Buckles remains popular with Troopers and the public.

Project Assist

In 1998, the Louisiana State Police and the Salvation Army entered into a program called "Project Assist" that provides timely assistance to stranded motorists who do not have the financial means to meet their emergency needs. This continues to be a successful program. It allows Troopers to obtain meals, gasoline, hotel accommodations, and/or mechanical needs should a motorist require it.

Other Programs

"BOOZE 'N CRUISE - You Lose" is an impaired driver prevention and designated driver program that is taught to sophomores in the fall and to seniors in the spring before proms and graduation parties.
