Regions of Patrol

Louisiana currently has nine State Police Troops, each of which is comprised of a collection of Louisiana's 64 parishes (the rather unique Louisiana analog of counties). These troops are grouped into two regions. Together, these regions are commanded by a State Police major and come under the administration of a regional headquarters. Each of the nine troops is commanded by a State Police captain.

Region I is headquartered in Baton Rouge, LA (the capitol city of Louisiana) and is the most-heavily populated of the two State Police Regions. Geographically, it encompasses twenty-two (22) southeastern parishes. It is bordered on the north and the east by the state of Mississippi and on the south by the Gulf of Mexico.

Within the Region I command structure are four State Police Troops, each commanded by a State Police Captain:

I-10 (east/west artery)
I-12 (Baton Rouge / Slidell)
I-59 (Slidell / Mississippi)
I-55 (LaPlace / Mississippi)

Region II is headquartered in Alexandria, LA. Geographically, it encompasses forty-two (42) of the southwestern and northern parishes. It is bordered on the west by the state of Texas, on the north by the state of Arkansas, on the east by the state of Mississippi, and on the south by the Gulf of Mexico.

Within the Region II command structure are five State Police Troops, each commanded by a State Police Captain:

Region II has three major interstate systems:
I-49 (north/south artery)
I-10 (east/west artery) and I-20 (east/west artery)

Within its boundaries are two major military installations - Barksdale Air Force Base and the U.S. Army Fort Polk. Also, Louisiana's third largest city, Shreveport, is in the northwest corner.
